OStim Standalone Troubleshooting Guide - Frequent Issues

Illegitimate copy of Skyrim: Special Edition
First of all, some OStim Standalone requirements will not work for illegitimate copies of Skyrim: Special Edition.
Support will not be provided for illegitimate copies of the game, please do not waste our time asking for help.

General Purpose Troubleshooting:
Isolating OStim Standalone
1. Test your current load order on a new save:
It could just be that your mod scripts broke at some point in your current game.
If everything works in a new save, follow the Clean Save Procedure at the bottom of this page

2. Start a new mod load order:

On Vortex:
First click on the button labeled “purge” on the top orange header of your mods page.
Then, go to settings and make sure the “use profiles” setting is enabled.
Then go to profiles on the left hand side and create a new profile (saves and ini choice doesn't matter), then go back to mods.
————
On MO2:
Click "Tools" > "Profiles" > "Create"

3. Enable OStim:
Following the OStim Standalone install guide, enable only the mods listed. Read the guide carefully.
Verify that the installed versions are correct for your Skyrim Version.

4. Test the load order:
Create a new game and test functionality using the directional up arrow on characters.

Results:
- If the game and OStim work correctly on your new load order but not on your main load order:
Something other than OStim on your main load order is causing problems. It could be that something is overwriting an OStim dependency, or OStim itself.

- If things are still broken on your new load order:
OStim Standalone has likely been installed incorrectly. Delete everything OStim, OSA, OpenSex, OSex related, all OStim dependencies, and all OStim mods, then reinstall only OStim and its dependencies following the install guide. Make sure you have the correct versions for your Skyrim version.
If that still doesn’t work, delete everything Skyrim related, all mods, all mod organizers, and start again using a legitimate copy of Skyrim.

When I start a scene, the characters are just standing idle and doing nothing.

In order for Animations to show up in an Ostim Scene, the following conditions must be met:
1. You have animation packs installed.
2. You have generated animation behavior files (Run Nemesis).
3. You have animations for the furniture you are trying to use
4. You have animations for the combination of actors you are trying to use (Solo, M/F, M/M, 3P, etc)
5. You are in the right animation branch (Standing, Kneeling, etc).
For Example:
- If you only have chair animations installed and use the Bed, you won’t see any animations.
- If you only have Male/Male animations installed and try to start a scene with Male/Female, you won’t see any animations.
- If you are in the standing branch but your animations are only in the Kneeling branch, you won’t see any animations.
- If your animations still aren't playing, you likely aren't using OStim correctly; The UI will fade after a brief moment of inactivity. It can
be revived using any of the navigation keys.

Characters are redressing in the middle of the scene.

You have installed3BAorBHUNPbody.
By default, these mods bind the same keys as OSA. The solution is to rebind the hotkeys in the 3BA/BHUNP MCM; you may bind them to Esc in order to unassign them.

The UI (navigation menu) doesn't appear / The UI (navigation menu) fades out instantly.
The UI fades out after a few seconds in any animation. Normally, using any of the navigation keys should restore the UI. If this does not happen, then try the following.
Delete the file "..\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition[ GOG]\OStim\ui_settings.json". OStim will generate a new one the next time you launch the game.

Facial expressions are static or not working.
Confirm that MFG fix is the correct version for your Skyrim: Special Edition version.
Make sure that MFG fix is not being overwritten.
If it's exclusive to the player try opening and closing RaceMenu.
Try on a new game. If it works properly there, clean your existing save.

The game crashes (CTD) on launch.
Follow the "General Purpose Troubleshooting" Listed at the top of this page.

The game crashes (CTD) when starting a scene.
Make sure RaceMenu is up to date for your version of Skyrim: Special Edition.
If you are using any of the following mods make sure they are up to date:
Precision.
If you are using NPC Names Distributor remove it. For whatever reason it causes OStim to crash.
If you are using OEquip stop using it, it is outdated and pointless, as there are no mods that require it.
As a last resort, follow the "General Purpose Troubleshooting" at the top of this page.

The game doesn't use the message box option that I selected /
The scene is adding a third actor even though I selected to add none /
The scene is using furniture even though I selected to use none

There is a bug with UIExtensions on 1.6.1130 where it causes message boxes to return the wrong results.
Either remove UIExtensions or select your options with the mouse rather than the arrow keys and enter.

Characters are misaligned.
How to fix misalignment?
1) RaceMenu scaling: OStim Standalone can account for changes in height scale through RaceMenu, but not the scaling of individual nodes. If you have changed the scale of individual nodes, undo those changes.
2) FK Diverse Racial Skeletons: This mod has been reported to cause misalignments. If you have it installed, try disabling it.
3) Mu Joint Fix: If you have Mu Joint Fix, make sure you have version 2.0.0 or greater. Versions earlier than 2.0.0 causes misalignment in OStim.
4) OAlign: Remove OAlign if you use it. Recent OStim Standalone features are not compatible with it. Even if you disable OStim Standalone penis angle and scaling, OAlign is a mod only useful for taking screenshots; there are reports of memory leak issues so it's not recommended for normal gameplay.

Also, (2023-08-28) Use Faster HDT-SMP 1.50.7rc-1, there seem to be issues with 1.50.9.0rc-1.

A DLL plugin has failed to load correctly.
OSA.dll: disabled, only compatible with versions earlier than 1.6.629

You still have an old version of OStim (5.x) installed. Remove it and only use the latest OStim Standalone.

First of all, make sure you have the correct versions of all the dependencies for your Skyrim: Special Edition versionaccording to theinstallation guide.

If you have Campfire or Simply Knock installed, make sure it is not overwriting PapyrusUtil.
Only after you have confirmed this, if it still doesn't work, try these solutions:

1)Move OStim.espto the bottom of your plugin load order;
2) Wait 3 minutes in game. Install MCM Kicker for possibly speeding this process up. Also getPapyrus Tweaks NGand enable the Speed Up Native Calls tweak for faster script performance (experimental, do it at your own risk!).
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/36801
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/777793) Start a new game;
4) Reload the save, save, close and reopen the game;
5) Reinstall OStim Standalone;
6) Install the previous version of OStim Standalone, save, and install the latest one on top of it.

Reminder: Incompatible Mods

The following mods areincompatiblewith OStim Standalone:

If you are performing these steps in order to update OStim NG or/to OStim Standalone, perform steps 1-5 normally, then install the new updates *instead* of re-enabling at step 6.
